English CURRICULUM
At our school, we use The Literacy Shed as a key resource to support both Reading and Writing from Reception to Year 6. It offers a rich collection of resources designed to inspire children’s imagination, deepen comprehension, and provide engaging stimuli for writing. Each half term or term, children explore a carefully chosen book or film—many from The Literacy Shed—which forms the basis for a range of writing genres, including narratives, persuasive texts, non-fiction reports, and poetry.
In Reading, we follow a structured approach using VIPERS, which stands for Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation, Retrieval, and Summarising/Sequencing. These key skills help children develop strong comprehension and critical thinking. The texts we use are selected to challenge and excite readers, while VIPERS ensures consistent coverage of the reading curriculum. Below, you’ll find an overview of the texts, films, and writing genres covered, along with the Reading VIPERS focus for each year group.
Maths CURRICULUM
Each area of maths is broken down into ‘Small Steps’—these are short, focused objectives that allow the children to master concepts gradually and securely. The small steps ensure progression within each year group and help children build on prior knowledge. Below, you can explore the small steps for each year group to see how your child’s mathematical understanding is developed over time.
SCIENCE CURRICULUM
Our science curriculum is carefully planned and fully aligned with the National Curriculum to engage children in exploring and understanding the natural world. As they develop key scientific skills such as asking questions, observing, and investigating, children are encouraged to appreciate the wonders of Allah’s creation. This approach nurtures both their intellectual curiosity and spiritual reflection, helping them to think critically and work like young scientists while deepening their respect for the world around them.
